Kenya’s oldest park, in two halves.
Tsavo is the oldest national park in Kenya and one of the largest conservation areas in the world. It was divided into Tsavo East and Tsavo West for management purposes, but together they form an ecosystem that covers nearly 22,000 square kilometres of territory.
This three-day itinerary moves through both parks, giving you time in each without rushing. Tsavo East is open and semi-arid: the landscape of red dust, the river, the dam, and the plains. Tsavo West is more varied: rocky terrain, lava fields, forest, and the Mzima Springs. Both have substantial and diverse wildlife populations.
This is a safari for those based in Mombasa or travelling through the coast region, and one of the best introductions to the Tsavo ecosystem available in a short format.
The itinerary.
Mombasa to Tsavo East National Park
Depart from your hotel and drive to Tsavo East. Enter via Bachuma Gate with a game drive en route to Voi Safari Lodge for lunch. The afternoon game drive covers the plains around Voi, where lion, buffalo, zebra, and giraffe are regularly seen.
Tsavo East to Tsavo West National Park
After breakfast, transfer to Tsavo West via Manyani Gate with game viewing en route. On arrival at Ngulia Lodge, check in and have lunch.
The afternoon visits Mzima Springs, where fresh water bubbles up from underground volcanic rock and flows clear through a pool inhabited by hippos and crocodiles. The underwater observatory chamber is one of the more unusual viewpoints in any Kenyan park. The afternoon game drive also covers the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary.
Tsavo West to Mombasa
After breakfast, depart with a game drive en route through Tsavo West to the exit gate. Drive back along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway and return to your beach hotel on the coast.
