Kenya Tanzania Combined Safari
East Africa’s two great safari countries, in one journey.
The migration, on both sides of the border.
Kenya and Tanzania share a border, an ecosystem, and the same annual wildlife migration, but they are distinct countries with distinct safari experiences. Combining them in a single itinerary gives you something neither country offers alone: the full picture of East Africa.
The wildebeest migration is the most visible example of this. The herds move in a continuous cycle between the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara in Kenya. Watching the migration in one country gives you part of the story. Following it across the border gives you the whole of it.
Savanna Secrets operates Kenya Tanzania combined itineraries in partnership with a sister company in Tanzania, ensuring the same quality of planning and ground support across both countries. Your itinerary is managed as a single journey, not as two separate trips handed off between operators.
The itinerary.
This is a sample itinerary. Duration, parks, lodges, and pace can all be adjusted to suit your group.
Nairobi to Amboseli National Park
Arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and meet your driver-guide. Drive south to Amboseli National Park, entering with a game drive en route to the lodge for lunch.
Amboseli sits at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. In clear weather, the mountain dominates the skyline above herds of elephant moving across the open plains. An afternoon game drive runs until sunset.
Amboseli, Full Day
A full day in Amboseli, one of Kenya’s most rewarding parks for elephant observation. Collect picnic lunch boxes and spend the day covering the swamps, the open plains, and Observation Hill, which offers a panoramic view of the park and the mountain above it.
Amboseli to Arusha, Tanzania
After breakfast, cross into Tanzania and drive to Arusha. Check in to your hotel for the evening. Arusha is the gateway city for northern Tanzania’s safari circuit and sits at the base of Mount Meru.
Arusha to Ngorongoro Crater
Drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, descending into the crater for a full game drive. The Ngorongoro Crater is a collapsed volcanic caldera, roughly 20 kilometres across, that functions as a self-contained ecosystem. Lions, elephants, black rhino, hyena, wildebeest, zebra, and flamingo-lined soda lakes are all found within the crater floor.
Ngorongoro to Serengeti National Park
Drive to the Serengeti with a game drive en route. The central Serengeti, Seronera, is where the permanent resident wildlife populations are highest. Afternoon game drive on arrival.
The Serengeti is one of the oldest and largest ecosystems on earth. The landscape shifts from the short grass plains of the south to the woodland and kopjes of the centre. Wildlife is present year-round; the migration cycle determines where the concentrations are highest.
Serengeti, Full Day
A full day in the Serengeti, following the migration route and covering the central plains. Picnic lunch in the bush.
Serengeti to Maasai Mara, Kenya
Cross back into Kenya and drive to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The Mara is the northern end of the Serengeti ecosystem and where the migration crosses during the peak months of July to October. Afternoon game drive on arrival.
Maasai Mara, Full Day
A full day in the Maasai Mara. Collect picnic lunch boxes and spend the day on the plains, covering the Mara River if the season is right for a crossing, and the open grassland where the resident lion prides, cheetahs, and leopards are found year-round.
Maasai Mara to Nairobi
Morning game drive, then drive back to Nairobi, arriving in time for lunch at the Carnivore Restaurant. Transfer to your hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
The migration is seasonal. The ideal months for crossing the Mara River are July to October. The Serengeti calving season, when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves are born on the southern plains, runs from January to March. We will advise on the best timing for your dates when you enquire.
