Shimba Hills & Mwaluganje
Coastal rainforest, the rare sable antelope, and a community elephant sanctuary.
Where the coast climbs into green hills.
An hour inland from the coast the land rises into the Shimba Hills, a pocket of coastal rainforest cooler and greener than the shore below. It is the only place in Kenya where you can reliably see the rare sable antelope, alongside elephant, buffalo, and a wealth of birds.
The day pairs Shimba Hills with the neighbouring Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary, a community-run conservancy created to protect the elephants that move through the area and to share the benefit of tourism with the people who live alongside them.
A few of the highlights.
- The coastal rainforest of Shimba Hills
- The rare sable antelope, found nowhere else in Kenya
- Elephants in the community-run Mwaluganje Sanctuary
- Sheldrick Falls, reached on foot (optional)
Park entrance fees apply and are arranged on request. The walk to Sheldrick Falls is optional and weather-dependent. Comfortable shoes are recommended.
